Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the center of which is a 20-meter (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record the match's statistical information. There are various formats ranging from Twenty20, played over a few hours with each team batting for a single innings of 20 overs, to Test matches, played over five days with unlimited overs and the teams each batting for two innings of unlimited length. Traditionally cricketers play in all-white kit, but in limited overs cricket they wear club or team colors. In addition to the basic kit, some players wear protective gear to prevent injury caused by the ball, which is a hard, solid spheroid made of compressed leather with a slightly raised sewn seam enclosing a cork core which is layered with tightly wound string.Cricket is one of many games in the "club ball" sphere that basically involve hitting a ball with a hand-held implement; others include baseball, golf, hockey, tennis, squash, badminton and table tennis. It is believed that cricket originated as a children's game in the south-eastern counties of England, sometime during the medieval period. Although there are claims for prior dates, the earliest definite reference to cricket being played comes from evidence given at a court case in Guildford on Monday, 17 January 1597 (Julian calendar; equating to 30 January 1598 in the Gregorian calendar). The case concerned ownership of a certain plot of land and the court heard the testimony of a 59-year-old coroner, John Derrick, who gave witness that:[5][6][7]"Being a coroner, I am in a good position to know that cricket is a very old game. I have seen a great many cricket matches played in my time and I have always noticed that there were two umpires. The game was always played on a certain plot of ground where there was a pitch and two sets of wickets. The wickets were put down, a coin was tossed, and the first innings was played. After that, the second innings was played and when both were finished, the umpires consulted each other and the result was given out. That is how cricket was always played ... I give you that as a matter of fact."Derrick's testimony makes clear that the game being played was definitely cricket and not some other game such as stoolball, which was also popular in England at the time. One of the earliest known references to the sport of cricket is in 1598, when two men in Sussex were prosecuted for playing cricket on Sunday instead of going to church. They were fined 12d each and ordered to do penance.[8]Cricket became popular in England during the 18th century. The first cricket club was formed in Hambledon in the 1760s, and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) was founded in 1787. The game achieved a level of prominence during the 19th century which can be best explained by its growing popularity with the betting public. Gambling on cricket matches became popular in the early years of the 19th century and by the end of the century it had become common place in England.[9]The legal status of cricket betting in England has been the subject of debate for many years. The general consensus is that cricket betting is legal, but there are some restrictions in place. The most notable restriction is the requirement that all bets must be placed with a licensed bookmaker. This is to prevent people from betting on cricket matches with illegal bookies, which would be unfair to both the bookmaker and the bettor. There are many different types of cricket bets that can be placed, and the odds offered by bookmakers can vary considerably. The most common type of bet is the match bet, which is simply a bet on which team will win a particular match. Other popular types of cricket bets include the following:Top Batsman – This is a bet on which batsman will score the most runs in a match.Top Bowler – This is a bet on which bowler will take the most wickets in a match.Man of the Match – This is a bet on which player will be named as the man of the match.First Innings Lead – This is a bet on which team will score the most runs in the first innings. There are many other types of cricket bets that can be placed, and bookmakers often offer special bets on big matches. Cricket betting is legal in England, and there are many bookmakers that offer cricket betting markets.cricket oddschecker
